Mini Horror Fiction Writing Guide

Have you ever wanted to write a horror story, but didn’t know how to start or proceed? In this easy, step-by-step guide, HowExpert presents Randal Schaffer: a horror fiction writer, enthusiast, and fan who will walk you through the process of not only writing a compelling horror story, but writing fiction stories in general. In this book, you’ll learn:-How to pick a topic for your book that will bring your readers along until the very end. -How to choose a setting for your book that your readers can understand and mentally insert themselves into. -How to write characters that your readers will care about, and either root for or against. -How to build suspense in order to create that perfect “page-turner” that all writers seek. -How to use gore in such a way that you’ll make your readers squirm, but not be so disgusted that they put the book down. -General tips on writing, such as keeping the story believable within the universe that you’re creating, and editing out anything that doesn’t serve the story. -How to wrap your story up in a satisfying way that will make readers seek you out again to read more from you. About the Expert Randal Schaffer’s tastes were turned in the direction of horror with the first film that he saw at the age of four, The Pit and the Pendulum with Vincent Price. The first story that he “wrote” using comic-strip style panels was about a mad scientist who creates a giant moth-man who then bit his head off. As an early reader, Randal began devouring H. P. Lovecraft and E. A. Poe in grade school, moving on to Stephen King and Clive Barker. He is writing his own series called “Shivers: Tales of Erotic Nightmare”. The first of these, Going All the Way is currently on Amazon, to be followed soon by book 2, Lady Frankenstein’s Lover. HowExpert publishes quick 'how to' guides on all topics from A to Z by everyday experts.

Hein Donner

Hein Donner

Hein Donner (1927-1988) was a Dutch Grandmaster and one the greatest writers on chess of all time. He was born into a prominent Calvinistic family of lawyers in The Hague. His father, who had been the Minister of Justice and later became President of the Dutch Supreme Court, detected a keen legal talent in his son. But Hein opted for a bohemian lifestyle as a chess professional and journalist. He scored several excellent tournament victories but never quite fulfilled the promise of his chess talent. Hein Donner developed from a chess player-writer into a writer-chess player. His provocative writings and his colourful persona made him a national celebrity during the roaring sixties. His book ';The King', a fascinating and often hilarious anthology spanning 30 years of chess writing, is a world-wide bestseller and features on many people's list of favourite chess books. The author Harry Mulisch, his best friend, immortalized Hein Donner in his magnum opus The Discovery of Heaven. In 2001 the book was adapted for film, with Stephen Fry playing the part that was based on Donner. Included in Hein Donner is the interview in which Harry Mulisch tells about his friendship with Donner. After suffering a stroke at the age of 56, Donner lived his final years in a nursing home. He continued writing however, typing with one finger, and won one of the Netherlands' most prestigious literary awards. Alexander Munninghoff has written a captivating biography of a controversial man and the turbulent time and age he lived in.

The Art of Memoir by Mary Karr

The Art of Memoir by Mary Karr

The Art of Memoir : Paperback : HarperCollins Publishers Inc : 9780062223074 : 0062223070 : 07 Sep 2016 : Credited with sparking the current memoir explosion, Mary Karr s The Liars Club spent more than a year at the top of the New York Times list. She followed with two other smash bestsellers: Cherry and Lit, which were critical hits as well. For thirty years Karr has also taught the form, winning teaching prizes at Syracuse. (The writing program there produced such acclaimed authors as Cheryl Strayed, Keith Gessen, and Koren Zailckas.) In The Art of Memoir, she synthesizes her expertise as professor and therapy patient, writer and spiritual seeker, recovered alcoholic and black belt sinner, providing a unique window into the mechanics and art of the form that is as irreverent, insightful, and entertaining as her own work in the genre. Anchored by excerpts from her favorite memoirs and anecdotes from fellow writers experience, The Art of Memoir lays bare Karr s own process. (Plus all those inside stories about how she dealt with family and friends get told and the dark spaces in her own skull probed in depth.) As she breaks down the key elements of great literary memoir, she breaks open our concepts of memory and identity, and illuminates the cathartic power of reflecting on the past; anybody with an inner life or complicated history, whether writer or reader, will relate. Joining such classics as Stephen King s On Writing and Anne Lamott s Bird by Bird, The Art of Memoir is an elegant and accessible exploration of one of today s most popular literary forms a tour de force from an accomplished master pulling back the curtain on her craft."

Kull

Kull

In a meteoric career that spanned a mere twelve years, Robert E. Howard single-handedly invented the genre that came to be called sword and sorcery. From his fertile imagination sprang some of fiction's most enduring heroes. Yet while Conan is indisputably Howard's greatest creation, it was in his earlier sequence of tales featuring Kull, a fearless warrior with the brooding intellect of a philosopher, that Howard began to develop the distinctive themes, and the richly evocative blend of history and mythology, that would distinguish his later tales of the Hyborian Age. Much more than simply the prototype for Conan, Kull is a fascinating character in his own right: an exile from fabled Atlantis who wins the crown of Valusia, only to find it as much a burden as a prize. This groundbreaking collection, lavishly illustrated by award-winning artist Justin Sweet, gathers together all Howard's stories featuring Kull, from Kull' s first published appearance, in ';The Shadow Kingdom,' to ';Kings of the Night,' Howard' s last tale featuring the cerebral swordsman. The stories are presented just as Howard wrote them, with all subsequent editorial emendations removed. Also included are previously unpublished stories, drafts, and fragments, plus extensive notes on the texts, an introduction by Howard authority Steve Tompkins, and an essay by noted editor Patrice Louinet. Praise for Kull';Robert E. Howard had a gritty, vibrant stylebroadsword writing that cut its way to the heart, with heroes who are truly larger than life.'David Gemmell';Howard's writing seems so highly charged with energy that it nearly gives off sparks.'Stephen King ';Howard was a true storytellerone of the first, and certainly among the best, you'll find in heroic fantasy. If you've never read him before, you' re in for a real treat.'Charles de Lint ';For stark, living fear . . . what other writer is even in the running with Robert E. Howard?'H. P. Lovecraft

How to Write Like Tolstoy

How to Write Like Tolstoy

For anyone who has ever identified with a hero or heroine, been seduced by a strong opening sentence, or been powerfully moved by a story's end, How to Write Like Tolstoy is a thought-provoking journey inside the minds of the world's most accomplished storytellers, from Shakespeare to Stephen King.';I have tried, as far as possible using the words of the authors themselves, to explain their craft, aiming to take readers on a journey into the concerns, techniques, tricks, flaws, and, occasionally, obsessions of our most luminous writers.'—from the Preface Behind every acclaimed work of literature is a trove of heartfelt decisions. The best authors put painstaking—sometimes obsessive—effort into each element of their stories, from plot and character development to dialogue and point of view. What made Nabokov choose the name Lolita? Why did Fitzgerald use first-person narration in The Great Gatsby? How did Kerouac, who raged against revision, finally come to revise On the Road? Veteran editor and teacher Richard Cohen draws on his vast reservoir of a lifetime's reading and his insight into what makes good prose soar. Here are Gabriel García Márquez's thoughts on how to start a novel (';In the first paragraph you solve most of the problems with your book'); Virginia Woolf offering her definition of style (';It is all rhythm. Once you get that, you can't use the wrong words'); and Vladimir Nabokov on the nature of fiction (';All great novels are great fairy tales'). Cohen has researched the published works and private utterances of our greatest authors to discover the elements that made their prose memorable. The result is a unique exploration of the act and art of writing that enriches our experience of reading both the classics and the best modern fiction. Evoking the marvelous, the famous, and the irreverent, he reveals the challenges that even the greatest writers faced—and shows us how they surmounted them. Praise for How to Write Like Tolstoy';The highest compl...
